Making handmade paper from scraps is both a creative and eco-friendly activity. By recycling your leftover petals, old paper (except newspapers), and natural fibers, you create unique sheets perfect for artistic projects or personalized messages. Here’s a simple and effective guide to making your own handmade paper.
Materials Needed for Handmade Paper
Natural fiber scraps: petals, old paper (non-newspaper), plant scraps, or even seeds to create seeded paper.
A blender: to turn your scraps into pulp.
A sieve or frame with mesh stretched across it.
A basin filled with water.
A cloth or absorbent fabric.
Steps to Create Handmade Paper
Prepare Your ScrapsTear natural fibers or old paper into small pieces. If you're using paper, soak it in water for a few hours to soften the fibers.
Blend the PulpBlend the scraps with water in a blender until you get a smooth, uniform pulp. You can add petals, seeds, or plant scraps to customize your paper.
Form Your Paper SheetsFill a basin with water and pulp. Dip the sieve into the basin and lift it slowly, allowing a thin and even layer of pulp to form on the surface.
Drain and PressLet the water drain for a few seconds. Flip the sieve onto a clean cloth and gently press it with your hands or another cloth to remove excess water.
Dry the Handmade PaperLet the sheets dry naturally. During the summer, a helpful trick is to use windows exposed to the sun to speed up the drying process while keeping the surface smooth.
Why Choose Handmade Paper?
Handmade paper made from scraps is perfect for writing personalized messages or creating unique cards. It’s a sustainable and aesthetic solution that helps reduce waste while celebrating natural materials.
By making your own paper, you adopt an eco-friendly artistic approach and contribute to a more sustainable way of consuming.
Check out this inspiring video where I show you how to create a single sheet of seeded handmade paper. To do this, I measured exactly 17g of scraps, added some flower seeds, and poured it directly into my sieve.
Happy sustainable creating!
